On Australia Day weekend, Perfect Moment Rider Poppy Olsen and a strong field of other Australian skaters descended on the newly built Empire Skate Park in Newcastle's Bar Beach to battle it out and see who the best bowl riders in Australia really were.
Poppy was competing in the Womens category, and at 11 years old, this put her at half the age of most of her rivals. The other categories were Under 18's Dew Am, Pro/Am & Masters, and the prize for the 4 winners, apart from a 20,000 dollar purse for the Pro/am & Masters, was to recieve a wildcard entry, to qualify for arguably the biggest and most prestigious Bowl skating event in the world, the VANS Bowl-A-Rama World Cup in Bondi on February 25th.
Poppy skated in her trademark pink helmet with a massive smile all day, before getting to the final of the Hurley Australian Bowl Riders Championships 2012, having a chance to compete against three women all in their 20’s. The crowd was roaring every time she had a run, and she skated the best we have seen yet, landing tricks that she had never done before. When we asked her later how she managed to skate so well she laughed and said ‘the crowd made her do it”.
Poppy will now be skating in the Dew Am Jam comp, with the 7 best Ameteur riders in Australia, running alongside the World Cup Event, featuring industry legends such as Pedro Barros, Bucky Lasek, and Rune Glifberg at Vans Bowl-A-Rama in Bondi at the end of this month.
We'll keep you posted on how she gets on!
