A brief interview on how beauty and lifestyle influencer Madeleine Spencer maintains perfect skin in balance with the sun.
My attitude towards the sun has changed. As I teenager, I loved to tan – not to be lobster-pink, mind – just brown enough to make wearing impossibly tiny skirts a possibility. In my 20s, my hemlines moved down a touch and the application of suncream became more frequent – but I was still going for bronze. Now, in my 30s, I’ve become far more careful in the sun. I still don’t want to burn – but I now also don’t want to tan. Not properly. A light veil of colour, sure. But a proper tan? No. It’s too ageing, too damaging, too exhausting to achieve. The colour I am after is the result of dips in the sea followed by faithful suncream application and shade-seeking during warmer hours. It’s incidental, not the goal of the holiday.
This is in part because I am now fully aware of how very damaging and unhealthy a ‘healthy tan’ is – but also because of other more superficial and immediate consequences. Pigmentation, for one; I get splodges on my upper lip if I’m not careful to protect my skin. I also suffer from the kind of dehydration that makes my skin feel like it’s shrunk a bit and is therefore uncomfortably tight. Neither of those are terrifically fun. Also, I’ve realised that a tan is so very transient – hardly worth the damage, really. So, on a recent trip to Portugal, I upped the ante on caring for my skin so that I could enjoy my time out there with impunity.
First, I slathered myself faithfully in Sisley Super Soin Solaire Facial Sun Care SPF 30 on my face, with a healthy layer of the Sisley Super Soin Solaire Milky Body Mist Sun Care SPF 30 all over my body – which I topped up regularly and with ease because the mist comes out as a light veil, meaning if you’re covered in sand, you don’t necessarily have to rub at your skin. Aftersun has become absolutely essential in keeping dryness and redness at bay – but I like to layer it over a lovely hyaluronic-rich serum, so post-shower, I would apply a few pumps of Sisley Hydra Global Serum to my face and neck, chased by the Sisley Restorative Facial Cream, while my body was treated to the classic Sisley After-Sun Care. Before bed, I mix a few drops of Sisley Black Rose Precious Face Oil into my Sisley Sisleya l’Integral Anti-Age cream.. When I got back to London, I cheated: Sisley Self Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care went on my face nightly after serum, while the Sisley Self Tanning Hydrating Body Skin Care went all over my body for a realistic shade of copper that didn’t damage my skin in the slightest.
