Chamonix, France

Set at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, Chamonix is an iconic destination for skiers and adventure seekers. With stunning views and heart-racing terrain, it’s a must-visit for those looking for unforgettable alpine thrills.

WHERE TO SKI

Chamonix Ski Resort is a paradise for those seeking both adrenaline and awe-inspiring scenery. From the challenging off-piste slopes of the Grands Montets to the famous Aiguille du Midi, it’s a destination designed for thrill-seekers. Beginners should head to the Brévent, where you’ll find wide, well-maintained pistes, while experts can tackle the steep, powder-filled terrain on the Vallée Blanche. If you're looking to push your limits, the Mont-Blanc massif has more than enough to satisfy. The best part? You can ski all day, then slide straight into one of the many après hotspots to unwind.

CHAMONIX HOTELS AND CHALETS

Luxury hotels in Chamonix provide the perfect base for a stylish alpine escape, offering indulgent spaces to unwind after exhilarating days on the slopes. From heritage properties in the heart of the village to design-led chalets with world-class wellness facilities, Chamonix delivers no shortage of high-end accommodation.

A blue-shuttered chalet with more than a whiff of Wes Anderson about it — from the outside, at least — the 19th-century Hôtel Mont-Blanc overlooks its namesake peak in the centre of Chamonix village. Inside, the interiors have had a modernising update, with luxe rooms defined by understated blond wood panelling, a restaurant serving sophisticated, seasonal dishes and a Clarins spa ideal for post-ski relaxation.

Another standout option is Les Aiglons Chamonix, a long-standing favourite that deftly blends traditional chalet character with trendy, contemporary interior touches. Its expansive terrace offers show-stopping views of Mont Blanc, while guests also enjoy access to the Deep Nature Spa, complete with a heated swimming pool, whirlpool and sauna — a welcome retreat after a day exploring the mountains.

UNMISSABLE CHAMONIX RESTAURANTS

An eclectic mix of Chamonix restaurants ensures there’s something to satisfy every appetite, from laid-back burger joints to stylish dining rooms helmed by internationally trained chefs. Whether you’re refuelling after a day on the slopes or settling in for a leisurely evening meal, the village’s food scene is as memorable as its mountain views.

Helmed by a Swedish chef known for his enticing fusion of French, Swedish and Asian flavours, Le Cap Horn is a spacious, family-friendly restaurant that serves up some of the best gyoza in the village, sprinkled with a black truffle and chilli crunch topping. Base layer leggings, an oversized down-filled jacket and Moon Boots will serve you well here.

Don’t leave town without nabbing a burger at Chamonix favourite Poco Loco. Be warned, the portions are monster, but the Beef Poco Loco Burger — a beef patty with Emmental cheese, lettuce, tomato, garlic sauce and fries, ensconced in a homemade focaccia bun — lives long in the memory.

CHAMONIX APRÈS-SKI HOTSPOTS

Chamonix après-ski is as much a highlight of the day as skiing itself, with a lively mix of bars, terraces and music venues offering plenty of ways to unwind after the lifts close. La Folie Douce remains the go-to destination for Chamonix’s young, fun crowd, known for its DJs, dancers and high-energy cabaret performances. But if you’re in the mood for music rather than theatrics, Chambre Neuf has live bands, plenty of beer and bags of atmosphere. It’s a much-loved social spot among both locals and tourists, serving fresh coffee early in the day, cocktails until late, and even transforming into a brasserie at lunchtime.

Our preferred spot for debriefing a day of thigh-burning adventure in the company of local ski guides and instructors is Elevation 1904, a brasserie-style bar with a generous terrace, perfect for après drinks and people-watching while soaking up the alpine vibe.
